Week 2 of the Wintersong Readalong! This week we have my favorite scene in the book, which is in the Games We’ve Played Chapter. It’s when Liesl stumbles upon the Goblin King naked in his bed after the ball, and his voice cracks from sheer panic.
Let’s just say that boys’ voices cracking at incredibly inconvenient times is a favorite trope of mine that may or may not show up in everything I write…
First off, I adore this series, I try to reread them at least once a year. Suffice to say, Liesl and the Goblin King live rent free in my mind.
I like the parallels of the forms Liesl and Käthe’s selflessness take for their family. Liesl’s jealousness blind her to the fact that Käthe is trying to provide in the ways she can, and wanting fine things isn’t just about pretty things but security too. She’s not always fair to Käthe but she’s realizing that.
I love the glimpses of the different sides of the Goblin King we see in this section! Cunning and cruel but also some guy who literally gets tossed out of his own bed. (We love to see it.)
