NaNoWriMo Day 6
Welcome to my little experiment, where I lift the curtain on my writing process during NaNoWriMo 2023 in an effort to feel less alone. If you’re also doing NaNoWriMo, feel free to add me as a buddy!
daily summary 📅
Not a good day. I spent most of it dealing with internet issues, and of course on the day I reveal the cover for AMI. I’ve been stuck on the point of chapter 3, so I had to call a friend and talk things through with them. Ended up writing most of my long, shitty word vomit words after dark, something I hate doing. Still. Words have been achieved, and it still counts as work!
daily process ⏱️
7:59AM. The bois slept in to their “normal” hour today, but because of the time difference, it really feels like I’ve overslept. Walk taken, coffee obtained, meds consumed, and now to catch up on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
9:09AM. I can’t tell if my laptop is the thing that’s acting up or my internet connection. I’ve reset the internet so let’s see if restarting my computer will fix whatever is going on. Also both bois are home with me today which means Castor will be banging on the “go outside” bells until his long walk ugh.
9:17AM. Okay, have almed Castor down a bit. When will this dog learn some patience and self-control? He’s 21 months old now, almost a full grown dog! Sigh. If the bois weren’t so cute and gif I weren’t already deeply bonded with them, they would be absolutely insufferable.
Anyway, I need to finish up the long, shitty synopsis for chapter 3 before I write a long, shitty synopsis for chapter 4 and continue drafting.
First, the point. The point of chapter 1 was Redacted seeng a redacted. The point of chapter 2 was multifold because it had to serve as a “Last time, on Guardians of Dawn…”, or the second chapter of every Babysitters Club book where they explain how Kristy founded the club (I say this as someone who has never read an entire Babysitters Club book), as well as introducing the political storyline and sending Redacted to redacted.
So then what is the point of chapter 3? I know this is the chapter that alludes to redacted. (The one disadvantage of the Zebra G-402 is how quickly it runs out of ink, but then again, I have written a lot by hand in the past couple of days.)
9:32AM. Took a pause to schedule heating maintenance and inspection. Goddammit, what has Castor gotten into now????
9:45AM. Okay, played with the bois and their flirt pole for a bit so hopefully they will settle down a little before I take them on their long walk and give me a little time to think and work.
Back to the point of chapter 3. [Redacted word vomit.] But what is the significance of it?
10:16AM. Rescheduled the heating maintenance appointment to a more convenient time. Also wrote 265 words of chapter 3’s long, shitty synopsis. Also got sidetracked by copyedits for AMI because I needed to check in the document what Redacted said about redacted. I suppose this is as good a time as any to take the bois on their long walk.
2:23PM. Because I revealed the cover of AMI today I’ve been distracted by that and nothing else. No wait, that’s a lie. I also updated my website and scanned copyedits. So yeah. Not a lot work done on GUARDIANS 3. I guess yesterday was a productive writing day, and since we can’t have two of those in a row, today is shit.
3:04PM. I’ve been updating my website to include AMI, but my internet keeps acting up. It feels like living through the late 90s again WTF are these dial-up speeds.
5:15PM. Well most of today was lost to AMI stuff and goddamned internet issues, but let’s see if we can brute force our way into hitting our word count for today, shall we?
I think I’m stuck because I’m know (roughly) the action but not the point of chapter 3. I haven’t had a lot of time to think because of AMI stuff, but let’s see if I can talk myself into a point.
[Redacted word vomit.]
6:33PM. Fed the bois and let them play in the backyard. I hate working after dark but beggars can’t be choosers, especially during NaNoWriMo.
Back to Redacted. What do [they] want?
7:06PM. Made dinner and have decided to call in the troops. Calling a writing friend for help and talk to someone other than myself.
10:10PM. 1924 words. Still not draft words, BUT WE ARE GETTING SOMEWHERE!
That’s Day 6 of NaNoWriMo done! How about y’all? Any successes? Failures?
