In the end, we none of us are given to know just where the path we’ve chosen leads. When it was all over, Sumire often wondered if all paths simply led to the same end, like a stream to the sea, and if it was the choosing and the journey that was the making of us. If fate was fixed, then why fight against what the gods had ordained? But Sumire never had any use for gods or religion, and when it came time to look back on the choices she had made, she would have rather made the choice and lived with its consequences, rather than regret the outcome. Because the choices she had made were hers and hers alone, and no one else’s.
