King Albert I of Britannia was dead.

The telegraph from Londinium, relayed through Rossikaya through St Petersburg and Vladivostok to Yokohama, arrived on the desk of the Foreign Minister in the early hours of the morning. The Duke of York was now King George V of Britannia, and it was imperative that the prince return home immediately to assume the responsibilities of the throne. The Minister roused himself from slumber and immediately departed for Prosperous Peace Retreat to deliver the message in person: The king is dead, long live the king.

But he did not find the person he was looking for there.
