“I would like to visit your merchant districts today,” the prince had said.
“What for, Your Highness?” Sumire had asked.
“My memories,” he had replied with a smile. It was shy, self-conscious, and not a little arrogant, despite his nervousness, and Sumire suspected he had intended to be enigmatic, not imperious. It was the first time she had seen a glimmer of good humor break through his melancholia and, heartened by the progress, Sumire decided to indulge the prince’s whims. So while Corliss, Campbell, Gordon, the Minister, the Count, et al gathered together to posture and sniff and mark their territories, Sumire and the Duke of York, like truant children, stole away from the Palace and made their way down toward Shijo Avenue to play.
