It was the first time she had seen a glimmer of good humor break through his melancholia and, heartened by the progress, Sumire decided to indulge the prince’s whims. So while Corliss, Campbell, Gordon, the Minister, the Count, et al gathered together to posture and sniff and mark their territories, Sumire and the Duke of York, like truant children, stole away from the Palace and made their way down toward Shijo Avenue to play.
